My senior studio project at Washington State University, Northport Thrive Town, aims to breathe new life into a small town, fostering a space where people connect deeply and nature flourishes along the Columbia River. Picture families laughing in Northport Oasis, neighbors chatting in Aspen Commons, and the whole community coming together at Civic Plaza for markets and festivals—designed with native plants, accessibility for everyone, and a touch of Northport’s rich history. It’s a vision of a vibrant, green community that blends the past and future for all to cherish.

Concept Plan

Site Analysis: Located along the Columbia River, features scenic views, steep topography, and historic infrastructure. Focused on water flow, accessibility, vegetation, and land use. Challenges include poor drainage, limited commercial space, and an aging sewer system.

Site Inventory: Identified opportunities for vacant lots, open green spaces, and rail access. Constraints include erosion-prone slopes, outdated utilities, and seasonal flooding.

Concept Plan: Designed as a family-friendly park with a forest zone, rendered in Lumion, integrating native planting, water-sensitive design, and ADA compliance to address community recreation needs.

Riversquare Park establishes a mixed-use development at the town’s core. Compact blocks integrate housing, retail, and public space to support walkability and economic vitality. The master plan fosters an active street life while reinforcing Northport’s long-term growth.

The Civic Plaza is designed as the cultural and civic centerpiece of Northport. Flexible space accommodates markets, festivals, and daily gatherings, anchored by a salmon-inspired sculpture that reflects the town’s heritage. This plaza reinforces identity while creating a vibrant community destination.
